Goose down clusters achieve greater warmth as these are larger than duck, yet with the same weight of filling. Natural duvets offer greater comfort through their greater 'drape-ability' and superior breathability. Down clusters lie closer to the body of the bird than feathers. Down has no quill and is therefore lighter, warmer and softer.
For the same tog rating, a natural duvet will be lighter than a synthetic; and the useful lifespan of natural fillings tends to be longer than synthetic, too!
Properly cared for, these duvets should last you many years.
Natural or Synthetic?
Duvets with natural fillings are soft, light and comfortable and provide excellent insulation: They are also highly resilient and tend to last longer than those filled with synthetic fillings.
For the same tog rating, a natural duvet will be lighter than a synthetic.
The nature of the fillings, the softness of the down, coupled with the support of the feathers give Natural duvets a greater drapability than synthetic filled duvets
Why Goose-feather and Down?
In Goose-feather and Down duvets, warmth is generated by the capability of the filling to trap warm air generated by body heat or other means. Essentially this is achieved by microscopic hollow chambers within the actual down or feather trapping air and giving insulation. Down is the best insulator due to its natural construction giving it a higher propensity to trap air.
What is Down?
Down clusters lie closer to the body of the bird than feathers. Down is the soft plumage on a bird's chest and belly. Down is smaller and lighter and softer than Feather and has no quill. allowing it to trap air and offer natural insulation.
What is Loft?
Loft is a measure of the "fluffiness" of a down product.. The higher the down content in a duvet the more of the insulating air pockets and the better the insulating ability. Our duvets have a great balance of 85% Feather and 15 % down.
What is important about the construction of the Duvet?
These duvets benefit from 'cassette construction'; the fillings are encased in individual stitched boxes, preventing the fillings slipping and clumping together and giving a balanced fill over the duvet helping to reduce the likelihood of cold spots This construction also contributes to the greater drapability that you expect of a natural filled duvet.
Which tog rating?
British Standard tog ratings range from 4.5 (summer weight duvet) to 15.0.0 (suitable for very cold winters). 13.5 TOG is the most commonly used in Ireland and the UK.
How long will my duvets and pillows last?
If proper care is given to duvets and pillows, these should last many years. Pillows tend not to last as long because they are subject to more wear and tear than duvets as you sleep on the pillow and under the duvet,
How do I care for my Duvet?
- Air the Duvet for 24 hrs before using
- This will allow the duvet to recover from being encased in its packaging.
- The number of times a duvet is laundered will have an impact on its lifespan, as will repeatedly lying or sitting on top of it as this has the effect of compressing the filling and eventually diminishing its ability to trap air .
- By regularly airing (over your banisters, out of the window or on the washing line) and plumping your Duvet it will help it retain its ability to trap air in the down and help maintain its natural insulating properties.
- Our duvets can be machine washed at 40 degrees C and can be tumble dried. Do NOT dry clean Natural filled Duvets as chemicals used in the dry cleaning process will damage the fillings. Natural filled Duvets can be commercially cleaned.
Can the fine down penetrate through the duvet cover?
- No - the cover is 230 TC Quill Proof Cotton
