Judge Logan discovered the loganberry growing in his California garden in 1880. It has remained popular ever since for its large, succulent, conical red fruits, which have a rich tangy flavour. They ripen after raspberries but before blackberries.
The plant needs similar conditions to blackberries - a sunny site with fertile, well-drained soil - with a little more heat and sunlight. Loganberry is a thornless form, with light green, smooth stems, that has been selected for consistent health and performance. The canes are best tied in securely to wires, ideally as a fan-shape. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it their Award of Garden Merit.
- Its large, dark red fruits are an excellent succulent soft culinary berry, delicious for jams, jellies and pies... great with apple!
- Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects
- Fruit starts ripening mid July and can continue until the end of August
- Delicious long cone-shaped berries best eaten when they have mellowed to a burgundy red colour
- Ideal for cooking and freezing as the fruit holds its shape well; even after it has thawed out from being frozen, the fruit still retains its unique rich flavour
- Plants have thornless stems and are heavy-cropping and vigorous
- Can be easily trained on a fence
- Fruit is quite ornamental
