Bissell's roots go back to 1876 when Anna and Melville Bissell owned a crockery shop in Grand Rapids Michigan, USA – where the Bissell headquarters still stand today.

Mechanically minded, Melville created a carpet sweeper machine in response to Anna's complaints about sweeping up stubborn sawdust particles used to pack china in the store. His ingenious design solved the problem, and soon everyone wanted the sweeper – so the first Bissell factory was built in 1883, in Grand Rapids.

On Melville's death, Anna Bissell took control of the expanding Bissell business, becoming one of America's first female corporate CEOs.

Bissell became steadily more successful through its commitment to research, and innovative product development. Queen Victoria herself used to insist that her palaces be ‘Bisselled’ every day!

Never standing still, Bissell brought another new dimension to household cleaning during the 1950s, with a revolutionary appliance that considerably reduced the time and drudgery associated with carpet cleaning.
