4 KEY TIPS FOR THIS SEASON

  • Weeds are growing quickly now so it is even more important to keep on top of them. Hoeing – particularly between rows of vegetables – is the easiest and quickest method. Hoe in beds and borders between cultivated plants. Keep your mind on the job, as it’s all too easy to slice into a prized plant!
  • Unless you have already mulched around your roses (perhaps when they were pruned in February or March), now is a good time to do it. A 3in (8cm) layer of well-rotted compost or animal manure will feed the soil and help prevent weeds – but watch out for the thorns!
  • Your lawn could benefit now from a going over with a wire-tined rake. Work over the grass in two directions, the second at right angles to the first. The idea is to extract dead grass and moss. It will also lift some straggly grass stems for more efficient cutting
  • The bird breeding season is upon us, so don’t disturb any nests. Don’t peer into any you do find, to see if there are any eggs. Leave hedge trimming, and the pruning of plants with nests in, until summer – preferably August
