Frankfurt am Main – or Mainhatten to the locals – is more than just being Germany's financial and commercial heart for the last five centuries. This culturally astute city is right in the centre of Germany, ideally placed to enjoy the best of both worlds: busy city life surrounded by tranquil countryside. Join the Frankfurters when they celebrate street-Carnival, the river (Main) festival or their traditional Christmas market. Rub shoulders on wooden benches to drink the local tipple, apple-wine (think: cider with a kick), and savour Frankfurter sausages but also indulge in the time-honoured tradition to take “coffee and cake” in the afternoon. To really blend in with the locals visit Frankfurt's world famous Zoo or the exquisite Palmengarten botanical garden.
But there's more in store for visitors to Frankfurt: a picturesque boat ride away is the cosy wine village of Rüdesheim - surrounded by steep vineyards of the Rhine Valley. And a short train ride from Frankfurt will take you to Germany's oldest university town, Heidelberg, with its picture-postcard castle overlooking the beautiful old town. Travel north to the medieval old town of Limburg and enjoy one of Germany's important cathedrals, the 13th century Dom and the town's historic castle.
Flights are flexible but the prize has to be taken before the 11th December 2015.
