Start now and get the Perfect Lawn by Summer

Getting a perfect garden lawn can be the pride of many homeowners and gardeners, if you start now you can get the perfect one by summer. Increasing the health and density of your lawn and creating a satisfying hobby, this is one of the best ways to improve the look of your grass and turf.

It's important to bear in mind that mowing is pruning. With all the care you put into pruning bushes and flowers, you shouldn't forget to prune (or mow) your lawn.

With our guide and the correct tools, you can have a the perfect lawn by summer. Proper mowing not only looks nice, it increases the health and density of you lawn, which in turn decreases weeds.

The desired outcome is to create a balance: cut too low and you can damage your lawn, cut too high and you can get weak and uneven growth. Luckily you can be a lawn ranger with our excellent guide below:

How to Mow

  • Wait until the grass is dry, otherwise it'll clump together, not cut cleanly and not all be sticking upright, and you may get a patchy result.
  • Different grasses have different mowing heights. Find out the type, or types, of grass you have in your lawn and mow it at the height it likes.
  • Don't cut more than a third of the grass' length in one sitting. This is called the 1/3 rule. Although your lawn can recover from being cut too closely occasionally, if you do it often you may get brown or bare patches, weeds (as the sun can reach the seeds easier) or bugs.
  • If you're mowing regularly and keeping to the 1/3 rule you can leave the clippings on your lawn to act as fertiliser as they're packed with nitrogen and nutrients.

  • Feed your lawn regularly. We recommend Spear and Jackson Lawn Master and Plant Boost as your fertiliser.

Mowing tips

  • Mow grass near trees slightly higher as it has to compete for both light due to shade, and water and nutrients due to roots.
  • Wait approximately four weeks before mowing a newly-seeded lawn to allow it to take.
  • Mow once a week during spring and autumn, twice a week during summer (unless there's a drought), and very rarely or not at all during winter.
  • When starting to mow again after winter, start at the highest blade setting and slowly decrease to your desired height.
  • The best defence against weeds is for your grass to be so health it out-competes it. To be health it needs regular maintenance, food, light, water and air.

Getting a striped lawn

It's a great feeling to have a striped lawn, and anyone can achieve it with a little care.

The striped effect is caused by the grass laying in different ways. Mowing all the way to one end of the lawn and then turning around and coming back the other way, then going back over your pattern with a garden roller will leave you with the correct effect.

You can add to this effect by turning 90o and mowing, then rolling, across your lawn to create a cross-hatched effect.

Finish by mowing a box around the end of your lawn and trimming the edges.

Advanced tips:

  • If your lawn has really been through the mill and is suffering, you can overseed it in early spring. Scatter lawn seed and brush fertiliser into the mix.
  • If you have moss, use a moss killer and and rake it out.
  • During early winter or early spring, aerate the lawn with a fork or spiking machine to allow for better drainage and air-flow.
