Thomas Tope Q&A

Watch Week has finally launched! On top of our fantastic deals and stunning collection of watches, we’ve also got exclusive behind the scenes content for you, including a Q&A with Thomas Tope!

Thomas started working in the watch and jewellery industry back in 1970, where he worked for an independent jewellers in Plymouth. He described it as ‘the kind of establishment where nothing was priced so if you had to ask the price you couldn’t afford it’. He then moved on to what would become the world’s largest jewellers – The Ratners Group – where he built up his management skills in the Ernest Jones sector.

Fast forward 20 odd years and Mr Tope is now the Global Sales Director of the Dreyfuss group. We managed to grab 10 minutes with him to chat about all things watch related!

What drew you to the world of watches?

“As a teenager, I was obsessed with watches and managed to get a retail apprenticeship in the premier jewellers in Plymouth (Rolex/Tudor/Omega agent). That started a 47-year career culminating in my role as Global Sales Director of the Dreyfuss Group (Rotary watches).”

What's your favourite Thomas Earnshaw timepiece?

“Before the Baselworld event I would have said the Bauer Skeleton, but now it's the Cornwall Bridge - the star of the Basel show in my view.”

What do you like about the watches here at Ideal World?

“There are some great designs offered at fantastic prices. Plus, you get informed comments with them all when they're live on air.”

What's your biggest achievement?

“Running global sales at Rotary and doubling turnover in the period before we sold to a Chinese billionaire.”

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

“I'm an obsessive chef, I started cooking very young from necessity as my mother was a terrible cook! She was a ballerina though, so she wasn't inclined to be in the kitchen. It continued from there - I cook dinner from scratch every evening and have devised a 'one-hour' roast chicken recipe which is always perfect!”
