Full Description

Aechmea 'Blue Rain' 15cm Pot

A relative of the pineapple, bromeliads are naturally epiphytes, clinging to other plants for support in their native jungles where they attract hummingbirds as pollinators - so this is a truly exotic houseplant.

Bromeliads grow in a rosette with a cup in the centre into which rainwater collects and helps deliver nutrients to the plant - much in the same was as insect-eating pitcher plants. When mature, Blue Rain will produce an amazing, spear-like flowerhead covered in blue and white flowers which contrast beautifully against the red stem. These blooms, due to their waxy nature will last for many months, bringing a burst of colour wherever it's placed.

Like other members of the family, the long-lived blooms are produced just once and then the central part will slowly expire, however, offsets are produced in the process which replace it, and over time a clump of plants develop with the potential for multiple flowers.

Really easy to care for, you just need to treat your bromeliad as if it were still in a jungle, watering in the cup with rainwater where possible (hard tap water tends to leave an unsightly crust of limescale around the cup).

A tip to get it to flower is to let the water dry in the centre of the plant then place a plastic bag over the plant with a ripe banana inside for a week or so - the banana gives off ethylene gas which stimulates blooming. When you have baby plants (pups) appearing at the side and the parent looks like it is starting to rot, leave the original in place, don't remove it as this will feed the growing plantlets.

Supplied as an established plant in a 12cm pot. Ultimate height and width 40 x 40cm.

Care Information

After Care of your Blue Rain Bromeliad:

  • Place your plant in bright indirect light in a warm, preferably humid room
  • Mist the plant occasionally and stand in a tray of pebbles to increase humidity
  • Keep the central well of the plant filled with rainwater from March to October. Over winter, keep it on the dry side, filling just occasionally and not fully
  • Remember to also water the plant compost as well as the central well, leaving it just damp
  • A very weak (quarter mix) of liquid houseplant feed once a month while in full growth can be poured into the rosette cup

Pruning advice for your Bromeliad:

  • No pruning is necessary, although any brown leaves can be trimmed
  • Once flowering is over, leave the main rosette in place as it dies back
